Production Log: Week 1

What have you contributed this week?

Through the first week of pre-production, the class had to create a pitch throughout the Christmas holidays to present to the class, this then lead to audience feedback which is very helpful as it will become beneficial in the future. My pitch went very well as it was very clear on what i wanted to do and how i wanted to do it. The feedback was challenging in the sense that I had to think on the spot to answer the questions well to clarify what the audience member may have been confused on. After the pitches were all done we were all then told to choose a partner and the music video idea we liked the most. The person I have chosen to work with is Prinul this is for many reasons which have been explained in the previous posted Group Rationale. After pairing up we then had to decide on what idea we wanted to choose. We then came to a joint decision of my idea as we thought it had the right creativity and flair to gain interest to our chosen audience. We both had put in our own input to develop my idea to make it the best it could be. We were given a A3 sheet which had helped us break the song down in verse and chorus this will definitely be beneficial in the future as it secures our ideas on how we both want the video to look like.

The A3 sheet we had filled out to break down the plan of our video.

How does this fit in with the production schedule/job roles/overall ideas of the project?

We have not started to film our music video yet which means we are not entirely sure of how the production schedule will look like. However we are clear and certain on the ideas that we want in our music video. Job roles have not been allocated yet as we are still going through careful detail on everything in our music video. For the overall ideas of the project we are both certain of who and where the locations of the video will be.

Were there any problems?

There have no problems for the first week. We are happy to be working together as we have known each other for a long time thus making us gel and work hard and well together. We have discussed our ideas well and are certain that we are on the same page.

How did you/will you overcome them?

As mentioned before there have been no problems to overcome. We are both hard working individuals and want the best for each other to create a really good music video. By wanting the best for each other we are both sure to meet deadlines and work together as a team.

What are the plans for the following week?

The following week will continue with pre planning and on our shooting script. I have created a shooting script on two previous projects through media this year and have found that if i didn't have it i would be totally clueless when it comes to shooting my music video. A shooting script is the make or break of the music video as it is the foundation of the creation of our music video. The shooting script tells us the amount of shots we are going to use, type of camera shots/angles and special effects. Everything on the shooting script will be full of precise detail so when it comes to creating footage we wont be lost on what we need to do.

Are there any areas of the presentation you would like to give any more detail on?

Throughout my presentation I feel I had went into as much detail as i possible could when talking about every slide. Although I did a good job in explaining what I wanted my music video to look like, it may not have been clear to my audience. I did ask my audience continually through my pitch to see whether they were on the same page as me and understood what I was trying to say, and they had responded by saying they did. Even though they had said they had understood what my idea was I would of wanted to be 100% sure they did by adding in examples from other music videos. This had become an issue when finding music videos which could relate and reflect y idea but it was difficult as my idea was very different and new to any other music videos thus making it hard to add in extra clips. Also timing would have become an issue as the pitch would of become boring and long winded if i made my audience watch clips.

What did your audience identify as the strengths of your music video idea?

The audience had agreed that my idea was original and different to the stereotypical generic idea of boy meets girl. They had thought this because my idea was from a different perspective, from the perspective of the other woman. This is a strength from my music video idea as it makes my video re watchable and more interesting, this was the main aim for my idea as I wanted to grab the attention of the viewers eyes by putting in something creative and exciting with a cliff hanger at the end. Although my idea can be controversial as its not something we would expect to see my audience was very keen on the idea as from my song and lyrics it was a good idea to put in narrative and performance conventions which is what i want to show through my idea. When being asked questions i feel that i had answered them satisfactorily clearing up any problems or issues they may have found whilst i was pitching my idea, which shows that I have thought of the issues previously. I was sure of who I wanted as my cast and the locations of my music video which will be vital when it comes to a shooting script in the future.

What did your audience identify as areas of improvements and what changed will you make to your music video concept based on feedback you received?

I was fortunate enough to receive pretty good feedback from my audience. However some people had some queries on how and what i will do for specific moments in my music video. A member of the audience had questioned on whether I would have someone lip syncing or whether I would have the song playing over my video, I had answered quite confidently and said that I would still keep the narrative element, how i would do this would be for example having a setting of a candlelit dinner with both the male and the "secret" at the table engaging quite intimately holding hands etc. The male will continue to engage and converse with the woman whilst the woman goes in and out of the conversation exchanging long looks at the camera whilst sings specific moments of the song. I had explained this quite well with the class as I had used class members as the man and woman in this scenario. Another question I was asked was about the software we will be using. I was under the assumption that we were using iMovie which is what i had said in my presentation but was corrected and told that we were in fact using final express cut. Being a newcomer to media studies i have not used this software before but have stressed that i am willing to put in the time and effort to learn the ins and outs of the programme.
