just being here, I’m a secret as long as we here he a secret
he’s my secret I’m his secret I love being a secret baby
Paparazzi always snapping got some columnist be rapping

So we meet at the Bellagio, need a key to the top floor
go down to the best door if I’m not there he waits for me so patiently
he’s so great to beee
You tell me how I’m your secret, nobody can tell
I’m your secret nobody will know I’m your secret
and he likes it and I love it and I know for sure I’m a secret
just being here, I’m a secret as long as we here he a secret
he’s my secret I’m his secret I love being a secret baby
When it’s me and you and were all alone
I can let my hair down take my shoes off
let me massage my soul and my love is never too much for him to handle
so I hold on, let go , the best care secrettttssss
You tell me how I’m your secret, nobody can tell
I’m your secret nobody will know I’m your secret
and he likes it and I love it and I know for sure I’m a secret
just being here, I’m a secret as long as we here he a secret
he’s my secret I’m his secret I love being a secret baby (x2)
Lyric Analysis
Target Audience. Age: 18-30 Gender: Mainly female. Interests: music, RnB, Soul, poetry, art. Location: United Kingdom/America Ethnicity: Black/White/Asian general backgrounds. The song has a specific audience as the song can communicate and connect to the audience as they can link the song from their own personal lives, this specific audience is appealed to more females within the 18-30 age bracket. This makes the likability of the song much greater as the listeners can understand and come to a mutual emotion on how the artist is feeling. Analysing the lyrics. The artist is singing about how she is having a secret relationship with her lover. Although being someones secret isn't the most ideal setting it seems that she gets a buzz and a thrill for being his secret as she says "and he likes it and I love it and I know for sure I’m a secret". Although she is this mans secret, there is no evidence that he has another relationship on the side as she says "I’m not there he waits for me so patiently", this shows that they are actually in love and that they enjoy being together. The chorus also proves that she enjoys being a mystery as she says "I love being a secret baby". The song however can be quite empowering to women as they are seen as something inferior to men which can really question many female listeners to why the song is written in this particular way. In the bridge of the song she says how the man makes the way she feels which is what many female listeners can relate too, with having someone that can let her hair down and relax as she says "I can let my hair down take my shoes off". This makes the listener feel good as it is a nice feeling to have when thinking about a significant other. Analysing the music The artist eases her way into the chorus of the song with a narrative building up in the beginning which is typical from the RnB/Soul genre. My artists influence, Keyisha Cole also does this. It is clear that Kim King wanted to grasp the same concept as one of the singers that she looks up too. Keyisha Cole also appeals to a female audience within the age range of 18-30 year olds. Analysing the tempo The tempo of the song is soothing, relaxing and slow which is what the artist kim king was looking for. Not only does is the song relaxing and slow, it also excites the audience as it has some fast and memorable moments in the chorus How would you use the song in a music video The music video I would create to go along with the song I have chosen would have a mixture of some performance, narrative and literal elements. The song begins with the artist on the phone to her significant other, I would start with a split screening to show them in two different locations but both on the phone to eachother. The female artist would be lip syncing the song whilst on the phone to him to make it seem like a conversation when really she is actually singing to him. It would then actually cut to both lovers meeting eachother outside the Bellagio hotel which is actually located in Nevada, Las Vegas. At this point I would want to show this hotel by using green screen as it would be impossible to replicate the hotel in my current location. I would also want a photo shoot to be present as she says the line "Paparazzi always snappin", this will bring the literal style to my music video as there will actually be cameras and photographers in this actual moment in the video.
The artist I have chosen to base my music video on is called Kim King, I am still waiting for a response from an email I had sent a week ago. She is about 26 years old and is based in Philadelphia, USA. Kim King is a RnB/Pop artist, from Philadelphia so many of her influences are also from Philadelphia too, such as; Jill Scott, Jasmine Sullivan and Will Smith. Kim King had started to sing Gospel music at the age of 11 and is also became a young mum at the age of 21. Kim King had originally been in a group called "Marq", from being a part of this group, made her really grow a back bone to move on forward and strive for bigger and better things. Kim K is currently still in school studying criminal justice, she did this to have a plan B option if anything goes wrong in her career. Clothing I would want my artist to wear. Outfit idea 1:
Leather Leggings
Bright coloured peplum tops
Gold necklace
Black Heels
Outfit idea 2:
Converse
Leather Jacket
Dark Skinny Jeans
Black and white Shirt/Top
I have chosen these specific clothing ideas and accessories for what I would want my artists to wear when making my music video. Kim Kings song is very Rnb and pop and i wanted the clothing i have chosen to represent this genre. I wanted to bring that style of music out with her clothing and what i would imagine what the artist would wear in the song. I chose two different outfit changes to show different themes within the music video. Theme 1 would be someone quite sexy but sophisticated. It would be something that would turn heads but not as a source of voyeurism. With the leather leggings bringing some kind of sex appeal when coming to the music video, with a peplum top to bring out the outfit with simple accessories such as the gold chain. Outfit 2 would be more casual and laid back as i want two different times of day to be approached when filming the video. Although it is casual it is still stylish and fits in with the Pop side to my artist genre. When choosing outfits i had to be realistic because i had to think of the clothing i had to offer when filming. This would be the best thing to do as when it comes to actually producing my piece there will be no problems or hassle buying and finding outfits. Typography I would want my artist to use.
This is the type of typography I would want my artist logo to be like, ignore what the words say I chose these images specifically for the typography. I came to the decision to use these specific images as they are influenced by the album covers that Kim King has been influenced in such as Keyisha Cole's album A Different me. I thought it would suit well to create a logo with this inspiration as Keyisha Cole is Kim Kings inspiration. When creating the typography I would want it to all be in black, thus making it look simple which is what I am trying to get across to the audience. Mise-en-scene i would use in the music video
Inside a car.
Street/Road
Park
Bedroom
Photo shoot
I have chosen these for mise-en-scene because it is what would imagine when you hear the song I have chosen. The scenery connote what the lyrics are, i would want a literal approach when filming my music video. For example the chosen location of the photo shoot is literal because there is a line in the song that says "Paparazzi always snapping" at this point in the song I would want someone literally taking a photo of my artist. They are all easily accessible and realistic settings and locations which is a bonus when filming my music video.
Colours I would use for my artists identity
These are the chosen colours I would use for my artists identity as they are bright and vibrant. The purple and pinks bring out the personality of the chosen artist as it sets quite a bubbly and feisty mood, which is what her music is. The red shows the fire in her music which contributes to her Gospel background bringing soul and passion. I feel the audience will like the colours chosen for the music video as they are eye catching and exciting. The colours mesh well with the genre of the music too.
Imagery which their song evokes in my mind:
"Take my shoes off"
"I can let my hair down"
"So we meet at the Bellagio"
"Papparazzi always snappin"
"Fulfill his fantasy"
"I love being his secret baby"
"Need a key to the top floor"
Relaxing tone to the song.
Girl on the phone in the beginning of the song.
When listening to my chosen song there are certain images that come to mind. The images above with the quotation marks are the lyrics in the song which give quite a literal meaning to them. The images i had picked out were the ones that came to my mind instantly when listening to the song, making Kim Kings song much more memorable. There is quite a soothing melody to the song which makes it more calming which is why i chose to put a picture up of someone relaxing on a beach. The image of the girl on the phone shows what I envision when opening the song as the song itself begins with a phone call with her lover. Another literal image would be the hotel Bellagio, i would want to use this image in my music video by using green screen, this is because there is no way I will be able to film in Vegas and I would want a particular shot of the two people meeting in front of the hotel. The people I would want to star in my music video will be Simran Nagra and Azhar Jamal. I have decided to chose these two to be the focus of my piece as they are a couple in real life. This comes to an advantage for me as they already have that chemistry which is what I need when filming my music video, to fit with the narrative that I want for my music video. They are both not camera shy which is also a benefit to me, with Simran actually doing A level drama she is the best person I could use to fit the role.
Andrew Goodwin had come up with a theory about the relationship between the music video and the lyrics. Goodwin has written a book called "Dancing in the distraction factory: Music television and popular culture" he says what is always in a music video and the particular relationship between the video and lyrics mesh and come into play. The features that are involved are:
The current relationship between the video and the song shown in the music video which amplifies, illustrated and contradicts the lyrics in the song
The record company will also include many close ups which is the star image shown throughout the music video, so the audience feels more connected to the artist.
Voyeurism is also something which is used a lot when it comes to the creation of a music video. It is specifically used for the revealing of women, making them look like sexual objects for the viewing pleasure primarily for males.
Intertexual references are made in many other media outlets for example TV shows, other music videos and films. They are usually done for the more funny/parody side which keeps the the audience involved and engaged.
Illustrating Illustrating is when the video shows on screen what the lyrics/artist is saying. It can also be done through a narrative form. A good example of the video matching the lyrics, with matching the image seen in the video to the lyrics being said would be, Rebecca Black - Friday. An example of where the music video does this would be at 0:29 when Black says "down do the bus stop", the visuals match what she is saying as she is already at a bus stop. Another good example would be at 1:16 when she says "cruising on the highway". The downfall to having a illustrating music video would be that it can become quite patronizing, boring and tedious, this is not beneficial to the artist or the song itself as it puts them in a boring light. It is clear that the music video is trying to reach out to the youth of today, especially at 3:08 when she says "partying". As soon as she says this there is an instant visual of a party which is what teenagers are usually associated with.
Intertextuality Intertextuality is when one bit of media refer or relates to another, this can be done in many ways. One way in which this is done is thought music videos. An example of a music video which has intertextuality would be Robbie Williams - You Know Me. The intertextuality in this video is made in pastiche as it relates to the classic film of Alice in Wonderland set in present day, however it could also be a parody as seeing Robbie Williams in a rabbit costume is not something that is seen all the time, so he could also be mocking the film too. At 0:33 the mirror Robbie Williams goes towards and falls into signifies the hole Alice falls into in the original film. Throughout the whole video Robbie Williams himself is dressed as a white rabbit which also references the rabbit in the original film. By having this style in a music video, it makes the audience be much more entertained and find it quite humorous which makes them want to continue watching it. At 3:40 Williams is standing on what seems to be the table from the mad tea party scene in the original film. This particular reference to the films helps the audience enjoy the music video more as its quite a popular film many viewers can relate and be more engaged into the music video as they have seen it before. The song 'You Know Me' was released in 2009, this is also a good thing for the film as its a refresher for the next film that had been set to release in 2010. At 3:20 we are able to see the artist in the middle of many women who are dressed up as bunny rabbit, this shows that the artist wanted to grab attention from any male viewers rather than young children and females, this is a contrast in itself as the film is a mainly targeted to children. By using intertextuality the audience becomes more interested and keen to watch it as they are curious to how the artist and director have changed or kept the same from the original film choice. It is also a great way to play around with the creativity as long as the base is still around the chosen film which in this case Alice In Wonderland.
Voyeurism Voyeurism is when throughout a music video males are rarely exposed however for females its the total opposite. Laura Mulvey came up with the theory of the "Male Gaze" which is the way men look at women, she believed that in film audiences have to 'view' characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. The video doesn't need to come across as sexual, but does carry a certain vibe and mood to keep the audiences attention. A really good example of voyeurism in a music video would be 50 cent - Candy Shop. Throughout the entire video it shows women wearing a small amount of clothing. At 0:25 women are straight away seen walking around a mansion in their underwear which straight away catches the attention of mainly the male audience, this makes them want to watch the video on a whole. At 1:24 the camera angle is set in a point of view angle which makes it seem as if the audience is actually the ones seeing what the camera is seeing. This brings a sense of involvement for the audience as it makes it seem as if they are there. At 1:40 we see a group of females in very tight and revealing clothes which objectify women for a male audience. The camera angle at 1:46 is at a high angle whilst looking down at the women in the video, presenting women as objects yet again for the viewing pleasure for man. This image can also connote to how women are seen to be at a much lower rank in society to men. At 2:34 we see a glimpse of both a male and a female in little clothing which does bring attention from female viewers, but not as much for the men.
Close Ups
Close ups are shots of the main artist or band, it is usually demanded by the record label to have these close ups so that the audience can feel closer to the audience. A music video with fair amount of close ups and midshots would be Lady Gaga - Born this way. There are many different close ups with a a lot of costume changes. An example of the close ups would be at 0:21, she is wearing very futuristic clothing and looking directly into the camera lens, making the audience feel more attached to Gaga as if she if looking directly at them. Another close up at 1:40 shows Gaga having a facial expression which could portray her going through some sort of pain and anguish. This makes the audience relate more to what Gaga may be feeling. Lady Gagas record company takes advantage of Gagas different personality especially how she is a mainstream artist. At 4:15 the close up inhibits quite a frightening tone showing to her audience one of many sides that she possesses. The camera language highlights many different attributes to her such as at 6:28 we see a birds eye angle shot, which is something you don't really see in music videos. By having more close ups Gaga gets much more publicity as the video mainly focuses on her.
Amplifying
Amplification is mainly used so the audience is able to feel the mood of the song for example if the visuals in the video show love and happiness, the audience viewer would feel the same too. An example of amplification with the lyrics, instruments and visuals to the music video which fit in with the same mood of what the video is trying to show would be The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down. The video portrays many emotions such as pain and anger it also gives a huge buzz of energy. At 1:33 the tempo and sound of the song becomes much faster and louder which shows the aggression the visuals in the music video shows. The visual actually shows the breaking down of her home as there are things falling of the walls and smashing. The body language at 1:52 the band shows also portrays the mood of the song as they are seen head banging and swinging their instruments around. At 2:12 the drummer looks angry as he is banging his drums quite fiercely which could show how angry he is. The band members are singing about the violence in a relationship which is portrayed really well in the video as the visuals at 1:35 match the narrative for example the plates smashing, the smashing of the plates symbolize the breaking down of the relationship which is very powerful for the audience to witness as although they cant actually see a relationship destroying the image of the plates is enough to make them feel what the band wanted them to feel which was, shock, anger and quite upsetting feelings. The camera language shows a woman standing in the center of all the chaos around her at 2:43, this connotes that the destruction has already happened but whenever she goes into the room she is haunted by what she had been through, which makes the audience feel more connected and sympathize for the woman.
Iconography
Iconography is when particular images or visuals are associated with a certain matter, such as individual elements relating to a genre of music or if the artist wears something that the audience can recognize them with. An example of iconography would be Kanye West. West has a individual style of clothing which makes the audience recognise him more as he is more of a trend setter than a trend follower. At 0:37 we see Kanye wearing these glasses otherwise known as shutter shades. These are eye catching as he is the first to wear them so every time shutter shades are seen you immediately think of Kanye West. The music video itself avoids the typical idea of a RnB music video. The only particular elements that the video shows to back up this genre would be at 2:32 when Kanye is wearing a hoodie which is usually associated with RnB/Rap videos. At 0:26 we see some kind of futuristic machine which is something that isn't usually related to the genre of music Kanye usually sings. In a typical RnB it is expected to see cars, money and women. An advantage of having a video like this would be that artists are looking to reinvent that stereotype and are willing to make their videos more individual, a bad thing would be that it does take away the original essence of a RnB video which is what makes RnB videos what they really are.
Contradicting
Contradicting in music videos is when the visuals in the video have no relationship or relevance to what the lyrics are saying. An example of a contradicting music video would be MGMT - Kids. The genre of this music video is psychedelic rock and indie pop, this gives quite a large persona to them as their music is meant to be loud and very upbeat. The video makes there personality's and characters seem strange and fairly disturbing The visuals show a baby being tortured by demons which enhances a upsetting and quite a disturbing tone to it whereas the music itself is very up beat and jolly. At 2:00 the lyrics say "crawling on your knees" the visuals whilst this is being said the woman is actually carrying the baby. The video itself makes the audience feel upset and on edge about the baby, they begin to sympathize for the baby and actually ignore the upbeat tone of the song. Another moment in the song that contradicts the video would be at 2:17 where the lyrics say "we like to watch you laughing" and the baby is shown crying and distressed. Right at the beginning of the video it misleads the audience into thinking it is about space as there is a astronaut voice-over. The costumes worn throughout the video also contradicts what the viewer would expect to see when watching the video. You would initially think the video will have happy children playing around however this is not the case as the video has people dressed in scary costumes at 2:35. This is very unsettling for the audience which makes them wonder why it was filmed the way it has been filmed. The persona of MGMT
Before starting this project I had to find an unsigned artist to create a music video for, I had reached out and email two different artists in hope that they will email me back with permission to use their song, I have unfortunately not received any response from both artists but will have to go along with one anyway.
99dollarmusicvideos.com is an institution mainly used on YouTube, which helps many new upcoming artists and different film makers create and promote their original music videos. Their work however must be controlled and created under 99 dollars. The official site of 99 dollar music videos has unfortunately been taken of the internet and has now instead used YouTube and their main source of music videos. There is also a channel which shows the making of the video so the audience are able to see how it was done. The channel points out that there needs to be at the most, 24 hours of footage. Also the editing process needs to be 24 hours too. This is beneficial to the artist as it is a good way for them to get familiar with time consuming tasks and many other skills and aspects that needs to be taken into consideration when creating a music video for example, cutting to the beat.
What is their ethos?
The ethos for 99 dollarmusicvideos are for the artist create a $99 video in the space of 24 hours and also to be editing in another 24 hours. Also the artist is able to express their own creativity in their music video. The whole point of this institution would be to bring the artist and the film producer together to create What types, labels and genres of music appear on their website? There are many different genres that air on the channel, however it mainly consists of indie, soul and rock. Artists that use this website to promote themselves are independent and unsigned. The channel is also allowing many upcoming artists around the world to produce new music videos to globalize their chosen genre and their music. Being an unknown independent artist has its benefits as they are able to be as creative as possible with no boundaries. How does 99dollarmusicvideos.com encourage audience participation? The channel encourages the audience by giving them hope as they tell them that they don't need much money to create a music video. On their YouTube channel they have a wide range of different music videos, this inspires any new upcoming artists to make a music video based on their own creativity. Is it possible to make a professional quality music video for $99?
It is possible to make a really good, professional music video as long as you are creative and have the correct equipment. Without these there is no hope to make a decent music video let alone a professional quality one. There are many examples of music videos on the YouTube channel which have been successfully done with a great idea and good camera skills. Here is an example of a well done music video which stuck to the ethos of the 99dollarmusicvideo. It has a wide range of different camera shots and angles, it also inhibits some special effects which hold the unique and creative side to the video. The video itself does take time to understand but still is engaging to the audience as they try to understand it more. They include the effect of stop motion at 0:58 which is surprising in a good way as they were able to pull it off and still stay within the ethos. The stop motion is something i would take into consideration as it looks really good and professional. It is something that i would try and include when creating my own production.
Music videos tend to have a range of different techniques, some work in favor however some techniques don't do the video justice. The various techniques used are:
Cutting to the beat
Green screening
Large number of cuts
Varied camera language
Special Effects
Lip-syncing
A music video which is a good example of when the music cuts to the beat would be Earthquake - Labrinth. The song itself has quite clear moments of where the beat changes and drops. The clips throughout match these moments making the video and the song mesh well together nicely. A good example of where the cutting to the beat of the video would be at 0:56 and 1:09 where the word 'earthquake' is said the base drops making the floor shake making the video itself entertaining bringing in the audiences attention. Labrinth uses a range of different visuals to also make the video interesting to the viewer, although he is performing to the camera it still feels as if he is performing in front of the audience. Another example of the video cutting to the beat in the music video would be right at the beginning between 0:03 and 0:06 in this time, the video jumps to various different shots as the beat changes, enabling the visuals match the rhythm of the song so they fit well together. This technique is done successfully throughout this music video as its quite clear for the viewer to see and hear where the base drops, making the video much more engaging.
However a music video which is a bad example of cutting to the beat would be Jessie J - Who you are. Cutting to the beat is found to be difficult when it comes to a much slower song which is definitely the case with this song. Without the cuts to the beat, the video becomes lifeless and boring for a viewer to watch which isn't a good thing for artist Jessie J. There are some moments when she starts to pick up the beat such as 0:43. In moments like these we are usually expected for the shot to cut to another one however in this video is cuts and slowly pans and finally comes back to Jessie J sitting at the table facing towards the camera at 0:49. The video itself doesn't do much justice to the meaningful song the artist is trying to portray to her audience. By having more cuts which this video does not have helps the video have more camera movement, more cuts to the beat and a better understanding to the audience to gain interest from them.
A music video with a great use of green screen would be Countdown - Beyonce. Beyonce uses a lot of green screen throughout her video to make the video itself more engaging and interesting to watch. Green screen is evident as there is a moment at 2:00 where there is more than one Beyonce on screen. This couldn't be done without green screen. The usage of green screen has been used effectively according to the up beat tempo of the song itself. The song is a fun party like song so Beyonce wanted her video to match this with vibrant colours of the background. The background change is done with the green screen at 2:56 This makes shooting the video less time consuming as all beyonce needs to do is do one shot for the director Adria Petty to change the background with the power of green screen. An example of this would be between 0:36 and 0:49. Beyonce had a lot of fun filming this music video with a variety of techniques, not only did she use green screen but she also used some special effects which were specially shown between 1:57 and 2:10.
A bad example of green screen would be Fabius - Blaze Um. The video itself has been poorly done with such little effort put into using the green screen correctly. The effect that the video shows is terrible, especially at 0:32 as he looks as tall as the ceiling making the video look disorganized and rushed. The green screen image itself has no relevance to the lyrics of the song either making the video totally random and not making any sense to the audience an example of this misunderstanding would be at 1:00. You can tell that the video tried to be interesting but unfortunately backfired made the video look scruffy and not throughout. A downfall to the video would be that it can instantly lose the audiences attention as there is just a man standing in front of the moving background which not eye catching or memorable. The genre through the music video is represented well as the clothing he is wearing at 1:30 are loose with a snap back which connotes the Rap/RnB genre. The green screen used throughout the video looks rough and untidy which puts the audience off, making them not watch the video completely. However this could be changed if more effort and thought went into his video.
A video with a large number of cuts would be 'Charlie Brown - Coldplay'. The song itself has an upbeat tempo with a lively colourful video to go along with it. By having a video like this brings in and intrigues the audience into watching the full video. a specific moment where the cut of the song matches the right place at the right pace in the video would be at 1:28. The director of the video did a good job of bringing in the audience with the bright and flashy video which matches the song as well. From the audiences perspective, the more upbeat the song, the faster the video should be as if it was a slow paced video the audiences attention would be lost straight away. The video also has a constant narrative as well which keeps the audience watching, the narrative is a typical girl meeting a boy at 0:13. By having two different techniques in the video makes the video very successful which is great for the producer of the video and the artist themselves.
A music video which displays a poor use of the number of cuts used would be "Who Dat - J Cole" . The director may not have wanted the video to have many cuts, but this did not work successfully as the video comes across as long and boring which isn't beneficial to the audience or the artist themselves. The video takes the audience through the journey of J Cole's life however the style of this video backfired as it was very long winded and boring to watch the whole thing. The video was literal in the sense that although J Cole is taking the audience through a journey he is taking them on a literal journey from 0:01 to the very end. The song however has quite an upbeat tempo so its only natural for us to see the video cut to the beat of the song, but in this video the footage slows the song down so visually it does not fit. The video holds a lot of paneling throughout the whole thing which becomes very repetitive to a viewer instantly making them get bored and want to see something new and different. If the video has matched the song and cut to the beat like it should be more people would want to see it.
A music video with good special effects would be Rihanna - Rude boy. The video consists a lot of graphics which makes the video a whole lot more interesting with the vibrant colours to go along with it. The colours and graphics used suit well with the artist, especially how Rihanna is from the Caribbean the colours and lively effects fit well with her culture at 0:16 where rihanna is black and white but the background is loud and vibrant. This particular technique really brought Rihanna's video alive and engaging to the audience which is an advantage for the viewing rate for the artist on many music video outlets, such as YouTube. The lyrics of her song 'Rude Boy' are also written throughout the video in a graffiti at 1:54 when she says "boom boom boom" The impact of the special effects works successfully towards the audience as it goes along with the party song making which makes the audience want to re watch and re listen to the song again.
A music video would bad special effects would be 'I Want It That Way - Backstreet Boys'. A reason to why the special effects were so poor would be because they had quite a low budget for the video making the effects used not the best they could be. The special effects used did not have any relevance to the song itself, they were completely random making the video completely random and lost. The video itself is located in an international airport and shows the scene transitions between the shots. They use a lot of dissolves from 0:15- 0:17 which makes the video look tacky. It also looks like the editor was lazy and could not think of anything else to show the transition. A high speed zoom effect which makes it appear that the foreground subject has not changed to a different shot even thought the background has changed. The artists are fading in and out from the international airport and outside on to a runway at 0:58. From this shot they are confronted with a group of fans with signs etc. This special effect is done poorly as it looks messy. The band members also begin to look transparent at 1:05 making it seem as if the video has not been produced correctly. As time has changed technology has evolved with bigger and better effects which is why the video looks so terrible. However at the time the video was something that looked amazing as they hadn't of seen anything better. With the poor use of effects the audience is uninterested and don't wish to continue watching the video which isn't ideal for the artist or the band.
A music video with good camera language, ranging in various different camera shots such as low angle, high angle and mid shots etc is Beyonce - Love on top. By having this variety the music video is much more entertaining and better to watch from an audiences point of view. In the music video Beyonce is performing to the camera as if the camera is the audience at 0:34. The great thing about a music video with performance would be that the there is a range of angles for the viewer to see which isn't possible if you were to watch her in the concert for example there is a high establishing shot at 1:56 and a low angle shot at 2:01. The effect of this technique brings different dynamics and changes to the video making it more exciting to watch and see. Even though Beyonce is the main focus of the music video, the dancers behind are also put into the shot at 0:38 which shows the dance moves to interest the viewers too. This is a great way to show that the song is actually a dance song too making the audience want to get up and dance.
A music video with a poor use of camera angles would be Tennis Court by Lorde's. Throughout the music video Lorde is in front of a plan background with a single mid shot just on her from 0:03 - 3:20. Her costume if all black with pale looking make up to resemble a clown. Throughout the entire video she is just staring into the camera as if she is looking at her audience, occasionally lip syncing some words. The whole video has no cuts or any other camera language for that matter, making the music video very simplistic and boring for a viewer. The awkwardness of Lorde just staring into the camera could make the audience feel uncomfortable. The mood of the song reflects the video well as it is depressing and dark. Even though its good how the video meshes well with the song, it still makes the audience not want to see her videos again. By having one bad video could potentially ruin the expectations of any other future releases of other videos from the artist.
To make a music video as good as it should be, the most vital thing to make it the best it can be should be the lip syncing. Without lip syncing the video is a total fail which leaves the audience thinking the video is not serious. A music video with good lip syncing would be JLS - Take A Change On Me'. The lip syncing throughout the video is very consistent and makes it seem as if the band is actually singing live. The facial expressions throughout the video are done really well, which makes the song much more believable. An example of this would be at 3:26 with Ortise having a strong facial expression of his face really connoting his emotion. By having movement in the body and the face make the video flow nicely. By having this technique in the video makes the video look much more natural. This also enables the band to work on dance moves more as they have already covered the lip syncing aspect of the song.
A music video with bad lip syncing throughout would be, Summertime - David Days. The lip syncing in this video is terrible, he is either too late, too early or completely misses out words when the lyrics come in the song. At 0:35, it is clear that he is out of time to the music, you can tell that he is repeating the same shots over and over again. This makes the video look very amateur as if the video is a home video. The man in the video rarely makes any movement in the video which could show that he himself is uncomfortable. With the poor lip syncing at 0:08 and 0:48 the video is not taken seriously by the viewers which limit how much its been viewed as it is so painful to watch him stand in front of the camera and not lip sync correctly.
